Causes of Occupational Accident Neglect Chain Formation

Workers' rights in Turkey, internationally, after first becoming a member of ILO (International Labor Organization); It has become popular with the signing of the "Framework for the Development of Occupational Health and Safety" no 187. With this contract, Türkiye; agreed to record, prevent and reduce work accidents and occupational diseases. Since then, it cannot be said that the laws and international agreements have reduced occupational accidents. The fact that the control mechanism does not work well is a major factor in the formation of this situation. Failures in the control mechanism lead to the first chain of negligence. The rings of the chain are complemented by natural disasters, albeit a little.

Causes of work accidents according to statistics:

  • 78% Unsafe Work
  • 20% Unsafe Situations
  • 2% Natural Events

Human is the Cause of 98% of Work Accidents

It can be seen from these rates that 98% of work accidents are caused by people. In other words, employees and employers have become the protagonists of negligence. It is seen that the employer and especially the employees exhibit irresponsible behavior at a rate of 98% when natural events are separated. The personal protective equipment that the employer is afraid to buy, the hard hats that the employees do not like to use, or the steel glove that a craftsman complains about and throws into a corner, and many similar examples prove the reality of this situation.

There are two factors for the occurrence of occupational accidents. One of them is dangerous situation, the other is dangerous behavior. The aforementioned dangerous behaviors are examples such as acting unnecessarily, joking, not using personal protective equipment while working. As an example of dangerous situations; Examples include not clearing the floor in the work area or using defective equipment.

The negligence of employees in occupational accidents can sometimes be called intentional dangerous behavior. This means that employees; Although they are aware of the dangers, they accept the risk and continue the same behavior under all circumstances. The most common cause of intentional dangerous behavior is people's overconfidence. Experienced workers continue with known unsafe acts against all odds. All of these behavior patterns; It reveals the negligence of employees, who are the most important link of production in occupational accidents.

Another link of neglect is employers. Unfortunately, the number of employers who do not worry about the worker working without protective equipment has a high rate. Giving years to the sector has added self-confidence to them in some issues, or they think that accidents will always stop by other businesses and pass them by. Sometimes they avoid providing personal protective equipment in order to reduce costs. It is known that many workers working without personal protective equipment, especially in the construction sector, died or suffered limb losses.

Is There a Decrease in Work Accidents?

In conclusion; Occupational health and safety rules have not been reduced due to financial or other reasons and due to the failures in the control mechanism. With the deaths caused by the accidents, approximately as many people as the population of a province lose their lives in Turkey every year. What is necessary for these conditions to change is; the correct operation of the control mechanism, and the creation of occupational safety awareness in employees and employers. For this purpose, occupational safety training should be given regularly, improvements should be made and controlled.

Remember! Small negligence in business has big consequences.
